In this talk we will look at homomorphisms between groups of birational transformations of projective varieties. In particular, I will give a classification of algebraic homomorphisms from the plane Cremona group to the group of birational transformations of a complex threefold. In a second part, I describe some examples of embeddings of the plane Cremona group to the Cremona group in four and five variables.
