How to explain (higher) categories to a geometric topologist?
Thursday, 25 May, 2023 - 17:00
Résumé :
You might think that categories, let alone higher categories, have nothing to do with geometric topology. But I will show you how they can be understood and used in a geometric way. We will start from the basic idea of classifying manifolds using Morse theory. Then we will see how this can be enriched by considering bordism categories and their applications to topological (quantum) field theory. Finally, we will explore the cobordism hypothesis and its intuitive proof. Don’t worry, this talk will be full of fun and easy-to-draw surfaces, not abstract nonsense. Trust me.
